Served
as Chief Engineering Officer for this startup designing high-performance
SAN storage subsystems.
·
Led design and development
o
Prepared engineering plans and specifications for a high-performance
SAN Storage Hub.
o
Presented technology to potential customers and investors.
o
Designed ASIC architecture for SPortal and DPortal chips. Developed
plans and chip architecture to rapid prototype using FPGA technology. Evaluated
IP cores for Reed-Solomon ECC, DDR SDRAM and Fibre Channel interfaces.
QUANTUM CORPORATION, Shrewsbury, MA
(1994 – 2001)
Served
in several key roles for this global leader in data protection, including Vice
President of Storage Systems and Software in the Advanced Development Laboratories of
Quantum’s $3.3B Hard Disk Drive business and Vice President and Manager
of the Solid State Business Unit.
·
Demonstrated leadership of engineering function in multiple
assignments.
o
Led engineering team through development of 3 product generations, 5
ASICs, port of firmware from C to C++ and change of microprocessor from 68000
architecture to NEC RISC.
o
Re-engineered product development and life cycle process; achieved
on-time completion and beat performance specification by 20% on first product.
Previous product had been more than nine months late and did not meet
specification. Instituted rigorous firmware code management and regression
process that improved product quality and OEM customer satisfaction.
o Negotiated and executed
joint development program for low-cost tape autoloader with HP. Led development
of new low-cost tape autoloader and 3-drive tape library. Started design effort
for new class of network-attached tape backup device (LANVault).
o
Led joint development effort with major defense technology company to
use DLT tape drive platform as basis for an optical tape drive.
o
Developed protocol for Internet caching SCSI hard drive with leading
caching software provider.
o Directed group through ISO
9001 registration process, and obtained registration on first audit with only
nine months of effort.
o Served on Quantum Patent
Committee
·
Led 40+ person, cross-functional business unit charged with developing

o
Doubled revenue through successfully marketing to two additional OEM
customers and an increased focus on the distribution channel.
o
Developed understanding of e-commerce system architectures through
direct market research with key e-commerce leaders (eBay, e*Trade) to determine
system architecture and product purchase decision criteria for e-commerce
systems. Employed this knowledge to achieve strategic repositioning of product
line.
·
Led efforts to choose tape library acquisition
candidate. Performed engineering due diligence for acquisition of ATL
Products. Developed engineering
integration plan with Vice President of Engineering at ATL.
· Represented division on company-wide
strategic planning teams. Researched five to ten year business and consumer
trends and defined strategic response, which led to acquisitions of ATL
Products and Meridian Data and entry into consumer electronics with Quantum
QuickView.
